An overview from Commercial and Engineering Manager Noel Sugden

High quality custom-made tubes, vessels and chambers depend on expert welding capabilities to deliver consistent, leak-proof performance. Tiverton Fabrications started business in 1983 focussing on bespoke rolled and welded tubes and has since developed expertise in a wide range of welded fabrications.

Commercial and Engineering Manager Noel Sugden has seen the business evolve and differentiate itself over more than 40 years. The company now supplies specialised welded cryogenic vessels, fired and unfired pressure vessels, sealless pumps and vacuum chambers and much more, developing an expanding range of applications for its core welding and engineering expertise.

Specialist welding capabilities

“Tiverton’s welding capabilities are exceptional,” states Noel, who started out on the shop floor and has experience in many areas of the business. “We have a team of highly-skilled, qualified welders who take pride in welding processes such as MIG and TIG welding, vacuum brazing and silver soldering to deliver high quality joints and fixings for a growing range of applications.”

With earlier customer-facing roles in sales, Noel became keenly aware that customers choose Tiverton Fabrications for this specialist welding capability. The team produces components and fabrications used in a range of applications including:

  • Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanners
  • Cryogenic storage
  • Ultra-High Vacuum (UHV) chambers
  • Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) transfers

Bespoke fabrication

Noel has wide experience across many aspects of Tiverton’s business, including roles in purchasing, quoting and as Production Manager. He has seen a consistent growth in diversity of fabrications required by customers, driving evolution in both the skills and plant available.

“Tiverton Fabrications supports projects across a wide range of scales, from very fine fabrications through to much larger engineered applications. We have cranage up to 6 tonnes; semi-automatic machine welding sets including orbital and longitudinal welders; CNC turning & machining, guillotining and cutting facilities, metal rolling (bending) along with many other services as well as expert manual welding. With such a range of capability, we are seeing increasing interest from sectors where weld strength is crucial.”

The company is a trusted supplier of bespoke welded fabrications to sectors where strong, corrosion-resistant, leak-proof bonds are essential, including:

  • Medical and biotech
  • Pharmaceutical
  • Scientific research
  • Aerospace
  • Energy
  • Defence

Engineering and Design for Manufacture (DfM)

With years of experience in the business, both on the shop floor and on the engineering team, Noel has a detailed understanding of what customers need and how best to achieve their goals.

“Alongside manufacturing to customer drawings, we provide Design for Manufacture guidance to optimise joint configurations and materials, delivering efficient, cost-effective fabrications that meet all technical requirements.”

The team at Tiverton Fabrications works principally on stainless steel and aluminium fabrications, and is also experienced in copper, brass, and exotic materials such as copper- or nickel- base superalloys (including Inconel and Hastelloy) where applications so demand.

Quality control in bespoke fabrication

Noel also has experience in quality management at Tiverton Fabrications, ensuring that he continues to demand high quality production in his role as Commercial and Engineering Manager. Fabrications undergo standard engineering quality testing, including Non-Destructive Testing, CMM inspection, die penetrant testing, seam X-ray and leak detection.

The company is TUV (AD2000 HP0) approved for the manufacture and inspection of pressure vessels, and a purpose-built Helium leak testing facility offers high quality Helium leak detection. The company also holds ISO 9001:2015 certification and BS EN ISO 3834-2:2021 for welding.

Part of Expromet Technologies Group

Noel welcomes Tiverton Fabrications’ new relationship with Expromet Technologies Group, which is opening up new opportunities for customers by offering fully integrated casting, machining, welding, fabrication and assembly across Group companies.

“Expromet’s investment, technical capability and global industry experience allow us to expand our capabilities, including new investment in a dedicated carbon steel unit for Defence customers. I am excited at the challenge and opportunities this provides for our team and for our customers.”
